Why we recommend bringing someone to your hearing test
You may have noticed we suggest bringing a friend or family member along. Here’s why it can make a real difference.
What to expect at a hearing test
Someone close to you may notice changes in your hearing first
Hearing changes can be gradual, and it’s not always easy to notice them yourself. If you can’t hear something, you may not realise it’s missing and over time, many people naturally adapt without even thinking about it. You might find yourself lip reading, turning your ‘better’ ear towards sounds, or avoiding busy or noisy environments. That’s why bringing someone who knows you well can be so helpful.
They may have noticed small changes in your hearing or situations where you’ve been finding things more difficult. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that while it can take years for someone to recognise their own hearing loss, those close to them often notice the signs sooner.
Their perspective gives our hearing care experts a fuller understanding of your hearing in everyday life, helping us support you with the right advice and care.
They can play an active role in your hearing test
When you bring someone you know well to your appointment, they can take part in what we call a “familiar voice test”. During the appointment, your friend or family member will read a series of words aloud while you repeat them back without being able to see them.
While it may sound straightforward, the results can often be revealing. Hearing loss can be more noticeable in real-life listening situations, especially when recognising familiar voices without visual cues. Including someone close to you in this part of the assessment helps us better understand how you hear in everyday environments. It also allows you and your friend or family to experience the difference that the right support including hearing aids, if appropriate can make.
This shared experience often provides reassurance and a clearer understanding of your hearing, helping you feel confident in the next steps.
